Telling Isabelle about Miley´s twerking and about Kim´s baby North

Back home from my visit with Isabelle in Stockholm. We had so much to talk about.. work of course but also nonsense. It turned out that Isabelle has been so out of the loop during her 9 week long vacation in Dalarna that she had not even seen all the twerking going on in Miley´s video “We Cant Stop”.

I was thrilled to fill her in on all the celebrity nonsense.  Like how Kim Kardashian sent out fake baby pictures to her friends  just to see who would be the first one to sell the picture to the tabloids. And all the twitter feuds: Like when Tom Arnold tweeted he was giving all his home videos to the thrift shop and Roseanne had a fit -being afraid she would be in some of them. Or Miley accusing her father Billy Ray Cyrus of cheating in another tweet.

Oh Lord the ridiculousness of it all is killing me!!!

But seriously I love how Kanye and Kim named their baby North West and if you are not one of the 5 million people who have already seen Miley Cyrus video “We can´t stop” you can watch it here! All the gifs in this post are from it and belong to Miley herself.

PS: When Miley was just a baby her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, released an album with the song Achy Breaky Heart on it. Remember it?  I loved it and bought the cassette on a road trip I took with my family in the US. We were going from Norfolk , Nebraska to St. Louis. It was a long ride and my father who love country music hated that God-Awful -Pop-Country-Sound so I had to listen to it on my Walkman. I did and I learned every single word to every single song on the album.

Miley’s video is so…strange. Oh well, we all go through a rebellious stage, right? I saw this parody online where they removed the music and added sound effects for the video and it makes it even wierder than it is all on it’s own… http://www.collegehumor.com/video/6903913/music-videos-without-music-we-cant-stop

Well i liked the video – a bit too much heroine chic i guess but still fun. I don’t how ever have a history with miley. I just started to know who she is.
Jenny come back soon – i had a blast!

Gee, now I have Achy Breaky Heart stuck in my head… ;-) And, ha, the CollegeHumor version is SO strange and good!

I really like the Miley Cyrus video and find her form of rebellion “refreshingly normal” (for a lack of better words!) I remember how, say five years ago, she was a person who a lot of my teen students were crushing on. Then she started getting “creative” and the same teens were like, “WTF?! This is so weird and bad!” whereas now they’re back to “OK, I see she’s just trying out different things, just like us, and she’s just fine.”

I have a lot of compassion for young pop stars and actresses who grow up in the public eye: sure, their fame affords them a great deal of privilege but also massive criticism. Then, when hell breaks lose and they have major personal problems, people have little empathy. (I think of Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan, who were slightly after my time but good examples of this.) Miley seems to have found a good balance and I’m glad.

Furthermore, on a superficial level, as a woman with super short hair, I’m glad to see it coming back en vogue!

For an excellent feminist perspective on “party-girl pop,” I highly recommend this article: http://bitchmagazine.org/article/party-out-of-bounds :-)
